Continuing the quiet, empty beach exploration this month, Selsey (south of Chichester) was next on the list and was visited last Saturday afternoon. Although the southerly point of the peninsula has wide, uninterrupted panoramic views of the sea it was the easterly beaches and Pagham Harbour that were the most beautiful landscapes with wide seascapes on the one side and woodland, reed beds, mudflats and wetland the other. Also of interest were all the houses made from 1920s train carriages, many of which had been extended but still had hints of their past with original doors and windows still being used. Never did find Patrick Moore’s observatory though.

Saturday morning I woke up at 4am and was unable to go back to sleep so I went out to the beach again on my bike, this time with tripod and bulb/cable shutter, hoping to catch the sunrise. It turned out to be overcast so there were no nice colours in the sky but it was awesome to be on the empty beach alone with my camera and the lights from the boats and the Isle of Wight to keep me company. After the beach I ended up out cycling around Portsmouth for another couple of hours, finally finishing at the harbour and the fish market, seeing the morning’s catch being prepared for sale.

To blow some of the cobwebs away I went for a long walk along the beach on Saturday afternoon. The wind was blowing a gale and with the incoming tide drawing the green sea in to the island in repeated, high waves. At the southeasterly point of the island is an old radar test station perched on a raised concrete battlement that drops down vertically in the sea, it was here that the waves were crashing and rising in arcs of spray. I took a load of photos with my old Smena camera and a few digitals which are over at Forever Circling.
