Tidal Epidermis I

Chichester Harbour is located on the south coast of England and is a large undeveloped, natural, tidal harbour with both Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Site of Special Scientific Interest status. The harbour has a perimeter edge of over 50 miles at high tide and covers a huge variety of habitats (salt marsh, shingle, sand dunes, woodland, streams, wetland, canal, etc) as well as villages, docks, marinas and boatyards, all of which have a part to play in the areas long history and it’s constantly changing future.

After moving back to the area after a long period away I discovered Chichester Harbour in a wider context after a visit to East Head, a beautiful sand dune spur that juts out from the harbour mouth. I had a strong desire to discover every different perspective of the harbour in all seasons, stand and walk on the different terrain, the changing tidal edges, the small lost beaches and take in and attempt to capture the senses and memory of the harbour as a defined whole, as a defined being with it’s own heart, metabolism, circulation, extremities, mood and soul.

So far I have walked over half of the harbour edge.
