This podcast episode is a little unusual as it contains some of my favourite songs from a music genre I loved back when I was a teenager, shoegaze or as it was also known, The Scene That Celebrates Itself. From about 1990 through to 1992 I was buying and listening to most of these bands and loved the wall off guitar sound. Ride, despite never associating themselves with the genre were innovators of that sound and the podcast track listing (in chronological order) begins with the first song off of their first album from 1990. The podcast also ends with Ride with what may have been the pinnacle moment of the sound in it’s popularity and critical acclaim back in 1992. Hopefully the podcast touches on some of the highlights of this brief two year period where this genre flourished.

I do realise this might be a bit marmite this episode but hopefully you’ll be in to it and turn up the volume very, very loud.

The cover and back photos are from The Wedgewood Rooms in Southsea.

Promise I won’t be this late again! Work has been shocking and I haven’t been at home too much so not able to listen to music (I have a tape player in my car, really). I’m hoping to get July’s episode uploaded next week with lots of new music. Also hoping to get an iPod next month too which will help loads. Also going to get a ticket for the Broken Social Scene and Tortoise joint show in London, can’t wait for that.

The cover and back photos are from the Cellars at Eastney, sadly looks like the little venue is going to close.

Late, late, late again, really sorry about that. Same old story, busy, busy, busy plus listening to loads of other peoples podcasts this month so not a lot of new listening so I dug out some songs I put by going all the way back to the first few podcasts.

The cover photo I took skating down an San Francisco street back in 1997, some very special memories from that trip. The back photo was taken whilst in a lay-by waiting for the AA, some time in 2003. Not so much fun.

Late again! Oh dear. Well worth the wait though, I hope you’ll agree. This month is one of my favourites.

I won’t go through each of the artists this month (all amazing) but I will mention Ben Carter from Boston who is super talented and got in contact a little while ago. I’ll be supplying some images for the artwork for his debut EP which is due soon, looking forward to hearing that.

The artwork photos are from Amy’s flat in Brighton, on a cold winter’s morning.

Sorry it is a bit a late but it has been a busy couple of weeks and I’ve not been able to listen to as much music as I would like. Hopefully getting an iPod at the end of the month so I’ll have it all with me at all times. Comforting thought.

Starting at the older end of the scale, the Jesus and Mary Chain recording is from a John Peel session from 84 and it is rather wonderful. Some hints of Shoe Gaze before it even emerged a few years later. At the newer end of the scale, finding out The Radio Dept. had a new album out made me very happy. This incredible band kept me stocked up on smiles in the early to middle of the last decade. So, so good. Be sure to get hold of ‘Lesser Matters’, absolute gold. Likewise the new Besnard Lakes (podcast regulars) album is rather special as is the new Magnetic Fields and the new one by The Tindersticks (fond memories of the mid 90s). Finally, anything released by The American Analog Set is going to be awesome, including the new b-sides and rarities album. Feeew, and I haven’t even mentioned all of the other bands included. Hunt them out too if you are feeling them, you won’t be sorry. It’s all a bit faster paced than usual this month, roll on springtime with warm air and music coming out of open windows.

The cover is from a cold but clear winter’s day in Southsea tinkering with filters. The back cover is a flooded carpark in Suffolk by an old abbey.

Not sure where to begin with this month’s podcast episode, how about from the end? Evening Hymns are wonderful and the new album Spirit Guides is very special. Northern Portrait wear their love of The Smiths on their sleeve, in a good way. The same can be said of A Red Season Shade with their obvious love of Mew, although not as apparent with the song I picked. Check their Interiors album, very good. Likewise check that Flaming Lips cover album of Dark Side of the Moon, amazing. What more can be said about Smashing Pumpkins and Kraftwerk? Untouchable. I picked a softer, more organic song from Kraftwerk and I picked a 1991 John Peel session recording for Smashing Pumpkins, Billy sounds young. Oh, and before I forget, BEAK> are from Bristol and include the mighty Geoff Barrow from Portishead. The album was recorded live in one room with no overdubs or repair, quiet awesome. Check the video below to see BEAK> in action during a recording session.
Personally, I’m glad to see the back of this year and this decade, here is to the teens. As for the podcast, just try and get hold of all of the albums, all so, so good. But I should say, in particular, check out ‘Slow Attack’ by Brett Anderson. Wonderful stuff. Hope you all have a great new year.

Hard to believe the podcast has been running for three years, that makes this the 36th monthly episode! Time flies. This month has been tough, I’ve listened to loads of new albums and had so many songs selected I’ve already got December’s song list almost done too. Heard that new Clientele album yet? One of the best bands (and from Hampshire!) and still making wonderful album after album. The new Old Canes album is stunning too and a good way of getting by until the new Appleseed Cast album due next year. The acoustic song by Metric is from their new EP, all acoustic versions of some of my favourite songs by them. So good. Can’t begin to say how good the Monsters of Folk, Arms and Sleepers and Among the Oak and Ash are. Finally there is a cover of Disorder by epic two piece El Ten Eleven, all made from overlaying guitar loops with pedals, not seperate tracks. See the video below of them playing it live, got to be seen to be believed.

The artwork photos are from a very drunken walk home as the sun came up. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but doesn’t it always?
